Player Profile – Billy Broadbent

William (Billy) Henry Broadbent was born in Oldham on 20 November 1901. The Wing Half started as an amateur with his home town club and made his debut for his home town club in a 0-0 home draw against Bolton on 15 January 1921.

He had to wait the following season for his next appearance, scoring in a 2-1 home win over Arsenal on 17 December 1921. His last Oldham appearance was a 5-0 defeat at Leeds on Boxing Day 1923. He had made 12 appearances.

Broadbent joined Division Three South side Brentford for the 1924/25 campaign. His Bees debut was a 4-2 defeat at home to Brighton on 30 August 1924. After two further defeats including a 7-1 reverse at Plymouth, Broadbent was involved in victories in his next three matches against Gillingham, Bristol City and Newport, all at home.

Broadbent made a further 12 appearances for Brentford but only saw two draws. His last of his 18 matches was a 2-1 defeat at home to Bournemouth on 2 May 1925.

Broadbent joined Clapham Orient for 1925/26 and stayed for six seasons, netting 8 league goals in 198 appearances. His Orient debut was a 2-0 win at Fulham on 17 October. His first goal for the club came on his second appearances and his home debut a week later with a 2-1 defeat at South Shields. In total he scored twice in 9 matches.

His most productive season in front of goal on his career came in the 1926/27 season with 3 goals from 29 matches. The following season saw Broadbent the most appearances in one season with 40 matches.

His last league goals came from the penalty spot with two goals in 1929/30; his final match for the club was a 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace on 7 May 1932.

Broadbent joined Preston in 1932/33 and made two appearances which both ended in defeat in space of a week.  His first match was a 2-1 defeat at Lincoln on 29 October, with his last league match was a 3-1 defeat to Bury at Deepdale on 5 November 1933.

Billy Broadbent passed away in 1979.
